The north-western area of Sicily offers some of the most precious beauties of the whole region. It starts from the Gulf of Castellammare, where there are some splendid towns such as Scopello and San Vito Lo Capo, without forgetting the Oriented Nature Reserve of the Zingaro and its uncontaminated coast. Not far from these places, in the stretch of coast that connects Palermo to Trapani, there are other enchanting places where it is possible to organize a day trip. Not to forget the smaller islands of Sicily, such as the Egadi and Pantelleria.

CASTELLAMMARE DEL GOLFO

Castellammare del Golfo is the quintessence of Sicilian tourism e of the summer holidays in the name of sea. The small town includes in its territory such an amount of things to see, to be a point of reference for lovers of Sicily

The town gives its name to the gulf of the same name that it boasts kilometers of enchanting beaches. Castellammare del Golfo was born as an agglomeration of the Elimi and its initial destiny was linked to that of the nearby Segesta. The strategic position on the sea influenced it destiny for centuries, so much so that it is always important to the rulers on duty. In more recent times the city has acquired those tourist characteristics that still make it famous all over the world. A tourist itinerary far from the coasts and from the aquatic amusements inevitably leads to the historical and scenic attractions. To the former belongs the Castle of Arab origin, perched on a spur and subsequently strengthened by the Normans. You can lose yourself in the beauty of the places of worship, some of which are of great historical and artistic value. We refer in particular to the Mother Church, divided into three naves and custodian of some valuable artistic works. Don't miss the 17th century Church of the Madonna delle Grazie. Finally, among the civil constructions, Palazzo Crociferi stands out, now the seat of the municipal administration and the ancient Fosse Granarie which came to light in 2014 during some road works. These are cavities with a depth of 11 meters and a diameter of 9 meters. Grain pits are present throughout Italy and were used for storing grain, sealed in such a way that woodworms or mice could not survive inside with carbon dioxide.

SCOPELLO

Scopello is perhaps the most evocative and picturesque place in the entire gulf of Castellammare. It is a small village built towards the end of the eighteenth century around baglio, on the site of a previous farmhouse Arabic

The name Scopello derives from the Greek "scopelos" (rock), from the Latin "scopellum" (rock) and from Arabic "iscubulus iactus" (high rock). Below, in the beautiful cove limitedby the Faraglioni and protected by old watchtowers, there is the Tonnara, known for some time immemorial (it is mentioned in documents of 1200). Inhabited since prehistoric times (finds found in the caves of the hinterland document the human presence starting from the Paleolithic), the area was known since ancient times for the abundance of tuna that were fished in its sea, so much so that it was called by the Greeks "Cetaria "that is" land of tuna ". The Arabs founded a farmhouse inhabited by fishermen and shepherds and, in 1235, Frederick II of Swabia, after having annexed it with all the fiefdom to the city of Monte San Giuliano, granted the property to a group of Piacentini colonists who, however, they soon abandoned due to the continuous pirate raids. In those centuries, in fact, the pirates who infested the lower Mediterranean used the bay of Scopello as a base for their raids: by mooring the ships close to the stacks they were practically invisible from the open sea. The Doria tower, named after the Spanish nobleman who had it built on the terrace overlooking the bay, dates back to the 17th century. Another, the Bennistra tower, is the one built in the 15th century on a summit south of the beam and which dominates the entire Gulf of Castellammare from its exceptional observation point.

RISERVA DELLO ZINGARO

The 1,620 hectares of the Reserve Natural Oriented dello Zingaro they extend into one of the landscapes most suggestive of Sicily, in arm of land that, moving forward in the southern Tyrrhenian Sea, it closes at west the Gulf of Castellammare

First nature reserve established in Sicily (May 6, 1981), it develops along the coast for over seven kilometers, in one of the few strips of land still intact in the whole island. They are mountains that rise from the sea, crossed by paths that lead to discover glimpses of landscapes of beauty in which the particular light makes the colors of the rocks and vegetation reverberate, contrasting them with the different shades of blue sea of the coast. Inaccessible overhangs on which Lentischi and Eriche, Ginestre and Euforbie, Olivastri and Terebinti, survivors of that Mediterranean scrub that once covered the whole territory, give refuge to Falchi, Poiane, Gheppi, Rondoni and Corvi Imperiali. In the reserve there are over 800 species of plants of great naturalistic and landscape interest. Among them the Flagellar Limonio (endemic to the north-western coast of Sicily) and the Marine Fennel, which take root among the rocks very close to the sea, the Carnation, the Fiordaliso di Sicilia, the Bocca di Leone and the Stellina Rupestre, which color more tall. The most common plant is the Dwarf Palm, which here reaches considerable dimensions: in addition to the Ampelodesma (the "Disa"), in some areas it is so dense as to give the landscape the typical appearance of the prairie. Over 40 species of birds nest in the reserve, while others overwinter or stop there during migrations. Here the queen is Bonelli's Eagle (one of the rarest raptors in Italy), whose presence was one of the main reasons for the establishment of the reserve, which regularly reproduces by nesting on the high walls of the high areas. The underwater landscape is an uninterrupted succession of colors and shapes. In the rocky walls covered with algae, anemones and madrepores, small fishes with the colorful liveries typical of the rocks of the coast swim. Deep down, where sponges are more frequent, a few isolated colonies of red coral can be found, while clouds of crystal splinter-like shrimp hover at the entrance to the numerous underwater caves.

SAN VITO LO CAPO

San Vito Lo Capo is one of the tourist destinations most famous in Italy and in the world. To do it a first-rate seaside resort they are the enviable position, the purity of waters and a "tourist culture" now rooted in the local inhabitants

This locality is located in the northwestern part of Sicily, on the homonymous promontory. The tourist attractions of San Vito Lo Capo coincide in part with the coast washed by the clear sea of Sicily. Not at case in 2011 the local beach was elected as the best in Italy: it extends for about three kilometers and includes all the necessary services to spend a relaxing day at the beach. It takes just a few minutes by car to reach another corner of paradise on earth: the Bay of Santa Margherita. You will find yourself in front of a stretch of pristine beach, included in a typically Mediterranean natural setting but with almost tropical features. Finally, to grasp the natural riches of San Vito Lo Capo, we advise you to go to the Zingaro Reserve. It is a protected area dominated by the Mediterranean scrub and populated by many animal species. Do not miss the stretches of coast that include suggestive coves and unparalleled sea views.

MACARI

Macari exists and is a village to be discovered together to the coast that hosts it. A journey of discovery of the small town south of San Vito Lo Capo that gives its name to an entire Gulf.

Quiet village - like the nearby center of Castelluzzo, almost suspended in time. On the other hand, in this strip of Sicily, people come in search of peace, authenticity, sea life. Macari is a handful of houses perched on the ridge of a mountain, yet it gives its name to an entire bay with a wild charm, surrounded by beautiful beaches. The Gulf of Macari is in fact a crescent of rough and rocky land. A succession of coves cut out between sheer cliffs and rocks caressed by the wind and waves. A short distance from the village of Macari you can dive into the transparent waters of Caletta Rosa or that of Bue Marino (in the photo). And you can relax in the sun on the beach of Baia Santa Margherita, perhaps enjoying the sunset and the panorama dominated by Monte Cofano, part of the Monte Cofano nature reserve. On clear days, from the Gulf of Macari, you can even see the profiles of the Egadi islands appear on the horizon. But other wonders are discovered along the coast to the north. Postcard places, which are not surprisingly known as "the Caribbean of Sicily"

MARSALA

Marsala (Maissàla in dialect, from Arabic Marsa Alì = port of Alì / large port) is an Italian city of 82,596 inhabitants of the Province of Trapani, on the coast western Sicily

Marsala is the fifth largest city in terms of population of Sicily (after Palermo, Catania, Messina and Syracuse), as well as the 63rd largest city in Italy, [1] is also the largest agricultural, industrial and commercial area of the province of Trapani, for these reasons it aspires for almost a hundred years to become the provincial capital. It has been a City of Wine since 1987. In its 250 square km of extension it has a rich cultural and landscape heritage, in its territory it includes, for example, the regional nature reserve of the Stagnone Islands of Marsala. It stands on the ruins of the ancient Punic city of Lilibeo (Lilibeum in Latin), whose name derives from the name of "lilibetani" or Marsala for its inhabitants. Its foundation is closely linked to that of Mozia, one of the islands of the archipelago, founded in VIII BC, which was an important Phoenician-Punic city. It represents the world capital of naval archeology [citation needed], since the remains of a Punic ship are kept in the Baglio Anselmi Museum, the only archaeological find in the world of a combat boat; dating back to 241 BC, the year of the Punic wars fought in front of the sea of Lilybeo. During the first of the three Punic wars, it was besieged by the Romans, and defended by the Punic commander Imilcone. Hence the historic siege of Lilibeo, which the Romans had the best of.
